Friday Music Showcase #015: Barbara Stephan

WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST
FRIDAY MUSIC SHOWCASE 15
Barbara Stephan
Barbara has been a favorite regular singer with many local bands but has also performed with national recording artists Susan Tedeschi and Jon Paris. She’s recorded her own original music as well as being staff songwriter for Full Moon Productions composing film/TV music. Currently she sings for Chicago’s blues/soul band Tabasko Sound Kitchen, North Coast Management’s, Livin The Dream.
The Barbara Stephan Band formed when like-minded musicians kept running into each other on the best Milwaukee stages such as The Milwaukee Ale House, Summerfest, The Jazz Estate and BLU at the Pfister. Recognizing the same penchant for funky, spunky modern day Motown tunes, they joined forces to make Stephan’s catchy and memorable songs come to life ala Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. “Stephan harks to the contemporaneous run of influential soul music at Memphis’ Stax label, with its lesser concern for pop crossover and looser-limbed rhythmic intuition than much of what was laid down in Detroit back when.” – Shepherd Express
Fans appreciate what they call “state of the art, sophisticated song-writing” and when they opened the show in August of 2018 the venue had this to say…“I have followed Barbara Stephan’s growth as a singer/song writer for years but was blown away by the show she brought to this year’s Concerts in the Gardens at Boerner Botanical Gardens.” – Mark Wimmer
Stephan’s EP The River was released in April to high praise. The full album will be released in 2019 with some of Milwaukee’s most talented musicians:
Joe Hite – Keyboard/Producer/Horn Arrangements
Dave Wall – Drums
Chris Kringel – Bass
Mike Standal – Guitar
Matt Antoniewicz – Trumpet/Horn Section Leader
Jason Goldsmith – Tenor/Alto Saxophone
Andy Spadafora – Bari Saxophone
Joy Bach- Vocals
Barbara Stephan – Vocals
Ever evolving and always imbued with the best grooves and ear catching musicality this band is seriously danceable, incredibly impressive and definitely one to watch!

Suzanne Grzanna was born and grew up in a small suburb of Milwaukee. Her parents Don and Maureen Grzanna are professional musicians and she started piano lessons with her mother when she was five. While Suzanne continued playing piano during her teenage years, performing at many competitions, she began doubling on the clarinet when she was nine so she could play in her school bands. Suzanne switched her main focus to alto-sax in seventh grade. In addition to jazz and hearing her father perform, she enjoyed classical and the pop music of the era. A performer from a very young age, Suzanne sang and played piano in her family band, playing jazz, rock and dance music. She gained further experience playing in her high school band and singing in her high school choir. While in college she not only performed with the jazz band but the school’s symphonic orchestra and a Christian rock group. She also sang with the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus for many years, starting at the age of 18. After attending Wisconsin Lutheran College and earning a music degree from Carroll University, she formed her jazz quartet. Suzanne immediately started a busy performance schedule, and she has not slowed down since. Suzanne has an upcoming role in the new film "Western Conviction" that will film in 2021. Her new jazz album will also be released in 2021.

WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST
Friday Music Showcase #14
Noble Truth
Noble Truth, an alternative rock group based out of Shorewood Wisconsin. We formed in high school after meeting through a mutual friend who thought we'd get along because we both love alternative rock music. I happened to be a big Nirvana fan at the time, but I slowly transitioned into more of a Beatles-esque songwriter. We get many Elliott Smith comparisons, however.
Guess This is Goodbye is a song about not knowing if you have the means to truly be a providing boyfriend. When you're young, you often question the validity of your adulthood because you have so little to offer yet in spite of the many responsibilities of being older
Mr. Man speaks of a man who continually meets lovely women in his life who throw off his dreams. Having gotten caught up in so many girls' affairs, he hardly knows who he is anymore having sacrificed his ideals for them.
Forget Who I Am refers to a couple who met once long ago and were separated by unfortunate circumstances. The chorus goes "I'll Wait Every Day", and I think that about sums up the song. Melancholy, though still a love song.
