DONOMA
Donoma is an eclectic Rock 'n' Roll band out of Kenosha, Wi., refusing to fall under one genre
When modern rock band Donoma decided to head back in to the
studio to record their third full length album, they decided it
wasn’t enough to match the success of 2017’s “Falling Forward”.
That would be fine for many bands as that record gained them
airplay on more than 120 terrestrial radio stations and helped
them secure direct concert support for the likes of Soul Asylum,
Meat Puppets, Candlebox, Tantric, and Rusted Root along with
many top billing shows. For this album the band put three simple
rules in place. First, to lyrically examine the world around them
and to not shy away from stating where they stood. Second, to
keep production to a minimum. And finally, to make a cohesive
album that re-imagined rock and roll’s glory days.
On “American Rust”, Donoma burst through expectations. With
eight songs blazing through at thirty-four minutes, listeners are
taken on a journey through today’s America with all of its hopes
and dreams and flaws. The album opens with “Rustbelt Tragedy”,
a no holds barred tribute to the American worker and ends with
“Road Song”, which tells the story of one man’s realization that he
must fight for what he believes in. Between those staggering
bookends, Donoma tackles millennial angst with the punky
“Nobody Wants Us”, race relations on “Hands Are Up”, the young
dreamer coming to America on the lilting “Maria”, the tour-deforce rallying cry of “Common Man”, climate change on “Home”,
and finally an assault on gun violence and the N.R.A. in the
chilling “Ballad of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.”
Paddy Fineran of Music Matters says that “American Rust” is
“delivered with a steely focus on melody, moxie, and mettle with a
fair amount of magic thrown in”, and “This is what music lovers
have been waiting twenty years for, the return of great rock n’
roll.” The Wisconsin Gazette called Donoma, “a group known for
its diverse music, eccentric attitude, and outspoken activism.”
The Wisconsin State Journal pitched Donoma as, “one of the most
eclectic bands in the state.” Wisconsin’s top music paper,
Shepherd Express added, “The band has an attacking sound, the
raw energy of artists in rebellion … Donoma merges influences
ranging from punk to Pearl Jam in to a Frankenstew of menace
and compassion.”

Heavy Metal Lap Steel Guitarist of Velocihamster
SEAN WILLIAMSON
Lap steel guitarist Sean Williamson is set to release a new single, “Thunderstruck,” under the moniker Velocihamster, following the vinyl LP release of his sophomore album, Balls to the Wall, along with singles “Sleepwalk” and “Mist” in June.
Reinterpreting the iconic rock anthem “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC, Williamson continues to foster his own niche within the metal / hard rock genre showcasing the lap steel guitar. The composition also marks Velocihamster’s first release with vocals, featuring singers Vincent Black (Sacred, De La Luz) & Dustin Moon (Reflections of Flesh, Atrocity Addiction).
“Playing ‘Thunderstruck’ is a legendary rite of passage exercise for guitarists, especially in music stores,” Williamson laughs, “and adapting it for lap steel was yet another pleasant surprise. It’s rewarding to keep finding ways to bring slide guitar to new audiences & inspire using the unexpected. Who said steel guitar players can’t be rockstars...LOL?”
Velocihamster’s trademark shred-style approach to lap steel is modeled after acrobatic electric guitar leads typically heard in heavy metal and hard rock genres. The project’s 2018 debut LP Wheel Of Steel garnered attention in Guitar World & Guitar Player magazines, earning it recognition as “the world’s first lap steel metal band,” and new album Balls to the Wall was recently spotlighted by MetalSucks.net in February.
Velocihamster’s “Thunderstruck” will be available on digital formats Friday, October 29th via Born Free, Then Caged Music. Full length vinyl LP Balls to the Wall & singles “Sleepwalk” and “Mist” are available now via Born Free, Then Caged Music at https://velocihamster.net & select vinyl retailers. Alternative Radio - Where the 80's Punk Rock Left Off
I talk with Payton about his beginnings, Alternative Radio, and his campaign: I Can Start A Band Too.
BIO:
In 2019 The band met at art school and began by playing campus shows at pop-up art galleries. This Milwaukee punk rock "n" roll band takes off where the local scene left in the '80s. Taking a cue from bands like Oil Tasters, Couch Flambeau, Violent Femmes, Plasticland, Yipes! and The Haskels, they continue Milwaukee's great history of local music. Stark's dad was a part of the Milwaukee, Wisconsin scene as well playing in the 80's new wave band Among Thorns. Alternative Radio looks back at the past to look to the future and returns to the primitive rock and roll of the '70s and early '80s. The band has started to go somewhere, as we got our first radio airplay, and have had record companies reach out to us now.
Personal:
After 4 years at an art school in Chicago, I moved back to Milwaukee full-time and was determined to get my band off the ground now that I had more time. My dad was in a few bands and had friends that played in iconic local bands, and he constantly told me about the Milwaukee scene in the '80s. I was disheartened when I came back to Milwaukee and saw that the scene was nowhere near the stories I heard from my dad. The general public wasn't really interested in local music, and bands didn't have the backing of local radio and publications to the degree they need. Being dissatisfied with the local scene, and knowing its history and how Iggy Pop and Jimmy Hendrix used to frequent Milwaukee's local clubs and scene I wanted to change that. I knew my band would never thrive if it didn't have an environment to thrive in. I started "I CAN START A BAND TOO", and decided I would bring back the local scene even if I had to do it single handily. I set up a website and did interviews with local musicians from the 80's such as Pat McCurdy of The Yipes!, and John Boler, of Bon Ton Society who actually is a great friend of my fathers' and frequently, is over at the house. I wanted to tap into their knowledge and hear from their mouths what they did to create success in the past in our city. I also started an online zine for the local scene that updates people weekly on what is going on locally. One cool thing that was started was digital compilations on Spotify of local bands. I hope to do different volumes of both of these as time passes and bring awareness to some things I personally find interesting in the scene. Right now the campaign focuses on rock "n" roll because the genre lends itself to D.I.Y. better than some others. I also don't want to throw hip hop, metal, and punk all on a compilation because then songs will get skipped, and that doesn't do a band's algorithm any use. Although I'm choosing to focus on the genre I know and feel I can lend myself the best to, I hope others rise to the occasion and do the same for the other music types. I love music and hope that I can pave a way for other groups who want to create something for themselves. Although I run the campaign by myself several others have been behind it and are excited to help grow the scene as a group.

7000apart
-------------------------------
7000apart is the husband-and-wife duo of Amelie Eiding and Jon Kresin. Their story began when Amelie left her hometown of Stockholm, Sweden to attend high school as an exchange student in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It was there where she met Jon and they fell in love. When she returned to Sweden, the couple started 7000apart as their creative project together named after the 7,000 kilometer distance between them. They spent three years like this before reuniting and getting married, and 7000apart became a serious artistic endeavor. They released their debut record “We Are More” in 2019, which now has over 100,000 streams and features on over 1,300 playlists on Spotify alone.
7000apart’s music transcends the relationship between Jon & Amelie. One of the cornerstones of their writing is mental health awareness, and their lyrics often touch on personal struggles and finding strength through dark times. They want to create music that resonates with others & helps them to feel a little less alone. The couple worked with Grammy-winning Nashville producer FEMKE on their latest single “Nothing to Worry About.” The song is their reminder to us all that no matter how hopeless the world seems right now, we can still find joy in whatever moment we’re in.
